Back at the New Jersey State Police headquarters in West Trenton, Detective Sergeant Dave Dalrymple began checking to see if anyone mentioned in the Virginia Beach reports owned a firearm.

“One thing we knew from the Virginia Beach report is that two projectiles were found during the autopsy,” he explained. “And those two were both .thirty-eight wadcutters. One of them was very well preserved, almost pristine, and the other one was also in very good shape.”

From his twenty years’ experience as a police officer, Detective Dalrymple was certain the shooter had little knowledge of firearms, as wadcutter bullets are only used for close-range low-velocity target shooting.

First Detective Dalrymple checked to see if any one of the dozen names in the Virginia Beach report had ever purchased a firearm in New Jersey. When he came up negative, the detective, aware of the laxer gun laws across the Pennsylvania border, where Bill and Melanie McGuire had drivers’ licenses, asked the Pennsylvania State Police to run some names through its database.

“And we were lucky enough,” said the detective, “to find Melanie McGuire had purchased a thirty-eight-caliber handgun, two days prior [to the murder].”

Records revealed that Melanie had purchased a Taurus, one of the eight different manufacturers ballistic experts had determined manufactured the murder weapon.

“And that’s when we started giving her a hard look,” he said. “We started viewing her as a potential suspect.”
